Building an independent interdisciplinary research institute

This is a thinking-out-loud essay, not a plan. The question I keep returning to: what would it take to run a small, credible, independent research institute alongside graduate study — without it becoming either a vanity lab or a startup in disguise?

What it is not

• Not a company pretending to do research to raise money.
• Not a solo blog with a grand name.
• Not a replacement for a university — universities are very good at what they do.

What it might be

A thin institution whose job is to make other people's good work possible: shared compute, a durable publication record (this site is the first brick), and a legible way to collaborate with established laboratories rather than compete with them.

The economics only work if the unit of value is a result — a paper, a dataset, a piece of IP, occasionally a spinout — and if the overhead of the institution stays small relative to the research it enables. Depth before scale, again: earn the right to grow by producing work worth housing, not the other way around.
